From the Editor
August is deep summer, and school is right around the corner:
- The
MetroWest CC Scholastic series is wrapping up
- James Krycka has a nice write-up on the start of the Team Email
Match with IECC
In July we saw Igor Foygel and Robert
Matthews sweep the Open and U1250 sections, respectively, of the July
tournament. In what may be a first for MetroWest CC, one family earned
three placements (Genesis, Timothy, and James Lung). Collectively, they
posted 5 major upsets. Overall, 20 of the 99 players entered in the 4
sections placed.

The 2005
championship event will be held in March 2005 as a closed 5-RR section
run in parallel with the other sections. The six participants will be
the top six club members on the championship points list (who accept the
invitation). Players earn points during the previous calendar year by
placing 1st-2nd-3rd in the Open section, 1st-2nd in the Upper section,
and 1st in the next highest section on a graduated scale based on the
section level and number of rounds. In addition, bonus points are
awarded for a perfect score. To qualify for the championship, players
have to be club members and need to play in at least 4 events during the
year. |

Team Email Matches
|
| |
|
For the third year in a row, MCC is engaged in an email match
against the International Email Correspondence Club. The IECC is
truly an international organization with well over 3000 members. In
2002 and 2003, the MCC teams split their two matches against the
IECC. This year an MCC team of 5 palyers (Michael Barry, Eric Berkey,
James Krycka, Jack Appelmans, and Jason Krienke) is playing an IECC
team of ten players from 9 different countries (Australia, Brazil
(2), France, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Peru, Poland, and USA).
Each MCC player is pitted against one IECC player as white and one
player as black. The match started in June with a maximum time limit
of 11 months. The IECC currently leads us one game to none. You can
view the games (minus the last three moves for those in progress)
from the Email Team link on the MCC home page. The MCC-3 team has
three players who each played in one of the previous matches (Barry,
Krycka, and Krienke) with a combined record of (+2 =1 -3).
Interestingly, two IECC veterans of previous encounters with MCC are
on the current roster (Batista of Brazil and Laliga of France).
Their combined record against MCC is (+4 =1 -1). While on the MCC-1
team, Krycka battled Batista in two games that each lasted 11
months, scoring a win and a draw. However, he reports that in his
current game against Laliga, the Frenchman has a huge positional
advantage.
If you are interested in joining a team in the future, contact
Harvey Reed. It’s a great way to improve your game through detailed
analysis and you can meet people from all over the world. Plus it
can be a lot of fun. |

Library
|
| |
|
The MCC Library is currently recruiting for a volunteer to be the
Program Director. The Library is in good shape, and taking care of
it will be light duty. This is a key position, since it gets quite a
bit of use from the lower sections.
If you are
interested in volunteering, please email Library at MetroWestChess.org or
see me on Tuesday nights.
