Statement of Policy on Computer Parings

The MetroWest Chess Club routinely uses computer software to pair and otherwise manage our events. The program of choice is Swiss-Sys.  Swiss-Sys has proven to be very accurate in its pairings.

USCF policy gives tournament directors a certain degree of flexibility in interpreting the sometimes-ambiguous rules and practices of generating pairings for Swiss-style events. In a manually paired event, the TD will be able to explain fully how a pairing was arrived at. In the case of computer-generated pairings, the TD may not always be able to state with certainty how the program selected among the valid options available.

SwissSys is capable of using many of the options available to TDs in pairing an event. To provide consistent results, a standard set of options has been selected for use and shall be applied for all events. From time to time, adjustments will be made to the standard for all subsequent events when such adjustments are deemed in the best interest of providing fair and equitable pairings.

Please take special note of the fact that the Look Ahead method of pairing will used and that it will create pairings that are subtly different than those created by the Top Down method of pairing which many players may be more familiar with.

Motion 9805-01

"Where questions arise in the accuracy and/or propriety of a computer-generated pairing, it is the policy of the MetroWest Chess Club to accept the program's pairings in the absence of an obvious or clearly understood violation of USCF rules."
