October 2002
1-85744-300-4 Paperback
0.31 x 9.32 x 6.48
144  Pages 1  copies $13.97
Book Description The Queen's Indian Defence is one of Black's toughest and most respectable choices against queen's pawn openings and is a favorite among world class players such as Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand, Michael Adams, and Judit Polgar. From the outset Black uses the dynamic principle of controlling the center with pieces rather than pawns, and this can lead to rich and complicated chess. The Queen's Indian is a multi-dimensional opening which appeals to aggressive and positional players alike. In this book, openings expert Jacob Aagaard delves into the many positional and tactical ideas available for both White and Black. Using illustrative games, Aagaard guides the reader through both the fashionable main lines and the tricky offbeat variations. *Up-to-date coverage of one of Black's most important defences *Strategies and tactics revealed for both sides *Written by a renowned openings theoretician About the Author Jacob Aagaard is a young International Master from Denmark who has carved out a deserved reputation as a diligent and outspoken chess author. His earlier opening manuals include Dutch Stonewall and Easy Guide to the Panov-Botvinnik Attack.

Book Description Chess Rules of Thumb gives you the winning principles of chess in clear, short statements. Three-time US Champion Lev Alburt and World Chess Hall of Fame Curator Al Lawrence have put together three centuries of insights from the masters. Fun to browse or to read from cover-to-cover, it's a book that all chess players-from beginners to grandmasters—lwiull enjoy for a lifetime. Like life, chess has its rules. The difference that your parents probably didn't tell you about chess. Never cross the street before looking both ways. Never discuss portable explosives in the airport security line. Never overthrow the cut-off man. Never download email from someone you don't know. Never take the queen's knight pawn. Save hours of head-scratching and uncertainty in your own games and understand why the masters make the moves they do: The worst square for a White knight is b.2. With rook vs. two knights, exchanging queens is worth a pawn. Never capture the b.2 pawn with the queen. Rooks united on the seventh are blind pigs. The winner is the one who commits the next-to-last mistake. Backed up with diagrams and illustrations to help you remember key principles, a glossary of essential chess terms and a rundown on all major openings, Chess Rules of Thumb will improve your chess play. And it's great fun to read! Never buy a chess book that isn't fun!

September 1999
0-938650-88-2 Paperback
0.44 x 9.03 x 6.05
200  Pages 1  copies $13.97
Book Description How many moves can YOU see ahead? This has always been a problem for the majority of players. Complicated evaluations are not possible if the simple ones can't be handled. It's not really a question of the quantity of analysis, but the QUALITY of analysis. It's necessary to understand what must be eliminated, when principles are a must, and to have goals or plans. In all of this, calculation is unavoidable. But calculation must withstand the constraints of time and reasonableness. Typically, too many players use intuition more and calculation less, because it becomes nearly impossible to keep track of all the branches on the analysis-tree. How does one look deeper and deeper to fathom the intricacies of a position? Buy this book and find out!

He therefore fully understands the challenges faced by enthusiastic players who are relatively new to the game. This is in sharp contrast to most books aimed at this level which are usually written by very strong players who have long forgotten what it feels like to be starting out in the game. December 1, 1999
1-85744-235-0 Paperback
0.51 x 8.19 x 5.67
160  Pages 2  copies $13.27
Book Description For all chess-players - from beginners to grandmasters, and whatever their style of play - one thing is certain: rook endings will arise in a great many of their games. Yet it is precisely in this area of the game that many players give away hard-earned points, either through lack of knowledge or inadequate understanding. Previous books on the subject have been extremely technical and theoretical, and therefore of little use to the practical player. This one is different. John Emms provides the essential specific knowledge, and explains the key concepts, that will enable readers to find the right plan in most common types of rook ending. Rook endings are reached in roughly one in five of all chess games. This volume provides everything you need to know to play rook endings successfully. The author is a battle-hardened professional player, himself the veteran of hundreds of rook endings.

December 1, 2000
1-901983-34-X Paperback
9.8 x 6.8 x 0.7 inches
239  Pages 1  copies $16.47
Book Description It is generally agreed that one of the best ways for a chess player to improve is by studying tactics - and the best way to do that is by practicing. This book provides a wealth of puzzle positions to test just about every facet of your tactical skills. The puzzles in this book have been selected by analyzing games new and old in search of original puzzle positions (rather than simply trawling through previous puzzle books, as is all too often the case). It is therefore very unlikely that even seasoned solvers will recognize many of these positions. Emms, by allying his skills with those of powerful computers, has also made every effort to ensure that the solutions are sound, and that there are no unmentioned alternative solutions. The book begins with over 100 relatively easy positions suitable for novices, and ends with 100 extremely tough puzzles, which will provide a mind-bending challenge even for top-class players. The remainder of the book contains just about everything between these two extremes, including selections of puzzles based around particular tactical themes, and graded test, where no clues are given as to the type of ideas involved. Every now and then, there are positions where the correct solution is a positional move, rather than a tempting but unsound combination.

1-85744-103-6 Paperback
0.50 x 8.50 x 6.00
128  Pages 1  copies $10.00
Description: Over the past decade or so a hitherto unexplored variation of the French Tarrasch has risen from relative obscurity to become one of the main lines. The "modern" French Tarrasch arises after the moves 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nd2 c5 4 exd5 Qxd5 and leads to open positions in which both sides have chances to seize initiative at an early stage. It is a favourite with attacking players such as Jon Speelman, Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. In this book, translated by ken Neat, Grandmaster Gufeld provides a complete survey of the state of theory in this fashionable variation. Every important line is covered in detail, supplemented by dozens of annotated games to illustrate important motifs. Eduard Gufeld is one of the most popular and widely travelled players on the international circuit. He has competed in no less than eight Soviet Championships and is known throughout the world as a coach, opening theoretician, journalist and author. (5 3/4" X 8 1/4", 144 pages, illustrations)

0-312-27293-6 Hardcover
1.14 x 9.54 x 6.42
352  Pages 1  copies $18.17
From Publishers Weekly During a postcollege stint as a blackjack dealer in Atlantic City, freelance writer Hallman discovered the chess community that thrives in dealer lounges. There he met 39-year-old chess master Glenn Umstead, who performed exhibitions while blindfolded and had "hoped to become the world's first black grandmaster." The two became friends and embarked on an exploration of the chess subculture, a grand tour that took them from Princeton to prisons, from windowless rooms to the "giant electronic chess room" of the Internet Chess Club (ICC). At his first tournament, in Philadelphia, Hallman found "watered-down machismo and bent personalities." He visits the chess-obsessed characters of Manhattan's Washington Square Park: "In winter chess players could be found in the park dressed in huge down jackets, the only problem presented by the cold being the difficulty of moving pieces while so encumbered." He interviews Claude Bloodgood, a high-ranking chess player serving a life sentence for murdering his mother who once reputedly tried to use chess to escape from prison (he denies it). Much of the book is devoted to a fascinating visit to Kalmykia, an impoverished Russian province, whose president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is "a not entirely unsympathetic supervillain with a kooky plan to dominate the chess world," evident in his 1998 construction of Chess City with its centerpiece, the Chess Palace, a five- story glass pavilion. Interweaving art and literary references along with the game's 1,200-year history, Hallman summarizes the many meanings and metaphors of chess in the final chapter: "Chess had come to represent intimacy, economics, politics, theories bleeding from rhetoric to outrageous science." Chess enthusiasts will enjoy this delightful tour. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist This is a book that chess players should not be without. Not only is it a voyage through the subculture of chess; not only is it a portrait of two men, an American chess master and a Russian dictator, obsessed with the game; not only is it a history of the game whose origins stretch back nearly a millennium and a half; not only is it all that, it's also an exploration of the complex psychology and philosophy of chess. Traveling with his friend, a rather eccentric chess master (eccentricity and a... read more
