Introduction

I was asked to provide some photo coverage of the event for
possible use by Chess Horizons, the Mass State Chess Association
magazine.
|
|
Since I was not likely to be present for the last round ( unless
I miraculously found myself on board 1 or 2) it would be tough
to get a picture of the eventual winners. With this in
mind plus the fact that its often difficult to get a good shot
due to location, people around and lighting, and the fact that I
was going to be playing as well, I knew I had better take shots
in the early rounds. Since its hard to guess who
will win the event in the early rounds, it was going to be tough
to know whom to take. So, whenever I felt like taking a
break from the board, I got up and took whatever shots were
available and tried to get everyone in the room at least once. |
| |
Another reason for taking as many people as possible was that
many chess players may not have any photo of them playing at
all, every, anywhere. With this in mind I hoped that you'd
come across a picture of yourself in this collection and
download it too keep. For many, I just did not get a
reasonably good shot. Sorry. Hopefully next time
I'll manage to get a photo of you. |
| |
Since you are not allowed to use a flash after the first few
minutes of the start of the round, I had to try and compensate
for the lighting by using the magic built into the camera.
Despite using the highest ISO available and being grateful for
image stabilization in the camera, any slight motion by people
in the shot resulted in blur. In many shots you will
see an elbow, chair, cups, bottles and other objects.
These may be cropped out later if the photo is to be framed.
Due to trying to angle between adjacent players and past
opponents blocking the view, it was difficult to get the ideal
shot. |
| |
Upon arriving home I eliminated the overly blurry and just plain
bad shots then adjusted for brightness and did color correction
and balancing as best I could. |
| |
The end result is that you may see multiple shots of some people
as well as maybe only blurry shots of others. I've
selected the best I had available. |
