Round 4 - June 17, 2003
Igor Foygel and Chris Desmarais split top overall honors; Jim Todhunter was
the Under 1750 winner with the tournament’s only 4-0 sweep, and 11-year-old
Calvin Bohn took clear first place in the U1450 section.
Foygel and Desmarais each won two games and took a bye in Round 3. Expert
Benjamin Goldberg, meanwhile, won three straight games to go into the last round
as the clear leader in the Open section. But that put him up against Foygel in
the last round (with the black pieces to boot), and the veteran senior master
won their decisive game to leap frog past him. Meanwhile on Board 2, Desmarais
defeated fellow master John Curdo to grab a share of the top spot with 3.5
points. Goldberg, expert Ed Epp, and A-players Noah Pang and Robert Powell
finished in a four-way tie for third place with 3.0 each.
Todhunter won four straight games, clinching his triumph with a last-round
victory over Mark Kaprielian on Board One. Kaprielian, Menno Koning, Matthew
Phelps, and Edwin Burnett shared runner-up honors with 3.0 points each.
Bohn, who will be entering sixth grade next year, won his first three games to
emerge as the sole U1450 leader going into the last round. He was paired against
the highest-rated 2.5, Milton Academy professor and chess teacher David Smith,
in the decisive game. Needing only a draw to clinch top honors, the youngster
played sharply and accurately to achieve that result and a 3.5 final tally.
All the big upsets in the last round occurred in the middle section: Andrew Luff
(1139) over Philip Mercurio (1660) -- a staggering 521-point rating difference,
plus Jim Krycka (1305) over George Goulding (1634), and Douglas Thompson (1283)
over Walter Champion (1612).
In U1450, : Matthew Perry (1048) defeated Fred L Harvey (1304), William Luff
(1026) knocked off Andrew Taylor (1279),and Ken Moraff (1136) overcame Gregory
Siciliano (1370).
The only Open section upset meeting our 100-point criterion was Noah Pang (1992)
defeating Bijan Haririan (2109).

Round 3 - June 17, 2003
Expert Benjamin Goldberg has defeated veteran A-player Al
Ward and fellow experts Noah Pang and Bijan Haririan in succession to post the
only perfect 3.0 score heading into the last round and a decisive match up with
top-seeded Igor Foygel.
Foygel and fellow masters Chris Desmarais and John Curdo are all a half-point
off the pace with 2.5 scores-- the first two via a pair of wins and a
third-round bye, Curdo with a first-round loss followed by two victories. Foygel
gets the white pieces against Goldberg on Board One, while it’s Desmarais-Curdo
on Board 2.
Goldberg, of course, is the only one of this quartet with "his fate in his own
hands," so to speak, since he alone has a chance to clinch clear first place
with a victory -- though defeating Foygel with the black pieces is a pretty tall
order. A draw in this game or a win by Foygel would leave the winner on Board 2
(if there is one) tied for top honors.
Top-seeded Jim Todhunter and No. 3 Mark Kaprielian have the only perfect scores
in the U1750 section and will meet on Board One in the finale, with Todhunter
getting the white pieces.
Eleven-year-old Calvin Bohn has swept his first three games to hold clear first
place in the U1450 section. He’ll face David Smith, the top-rated player with
2.5, on Board One, with Smith getting the white pieces.
Upsets: Gregory W Cermak (851) defeated Peter H Lee (1329); William Luff (1026)
defeated Jason D. Krienke (1339); Raymond Salemi (1045) defeated Steven L Eddins
(1332); Louis P Jacques (1400) Severine Wamala (1679); Eric Sonnenstuhl (1359)
defeated George Goulding (1634); Joey Kagan (1544) defeated Philip Mercurio

Round 2 - June 10, 2003
The numbers keep turning out, with a record-tying 89 players competing in the June tournament so far: 26 in the Open section, 28 in U1750, and 35 in U1450.
Igor Foygel, Chris Desmarais, Bijan Haririan and Benjamin Goldberg share the lead at the halfway point with perfect 2.0 scores, with another quartet of John Curdo, Ed Epp, Derek Slater, and Neil Cousin breathing down their necks at 1.5. The top-seeded Foygel is taking a third-round bye, however, leading to a Board One pairing of Haririan - Desmarais, followed by Goldberg-Epp, Curdo-Slater, and John Chamberlain (the top-rated 1.0)-Cousin.
There’s also a four-way tie at 2.0 for the U1750 lead among Jim Todhunter, Mark Kaprielian, Matthew Phelps, and Ed Burnett. Meanwhile just two players are perfect in U1450 -- fifth-grader Calvin Bohn and 779-rated Patrick Cosentino, the latter via a first-round upset of Mary Murphy (1056) followed by the tournament’s biggest form reversal so far when he knocked off 1304-rated Fred Harvey.
The father-son team of Severine and Yowana Wamala scored two of the other major upsets to date: Severine (1643) defeating Robert Powell (1982) in Round One and 7-year-old Yowana (553) shocking Raymond Salemi (1045) in Round Two. Other notable surprise results: Trent Masiki (662) over Aaron Klein (1103); Plamen Krastev (1364) over Paul Vlahos (1542); Cousin (1855) holding Curdo (2206) to a draw; Calvin Hori over Jack Martin; Louis Jacques (1400) over Joey Kagan (1544); Tom Martin (1175) over Fred Harvey (1304); Phelps (1575) over Bill Michael (1700); Lanny Sun (1251) over Scott McLaughlin (1371); Andrew Taylor (1279) over John McLaughlin (1390); and John Bottini (1231) over Steven Eddins (1332).
