Round 1 - September 2, 2003
Upsets were the order of the day as the five-round September Swiss got under way. One expert fell in the Open section, the top three seeds all were nicked in the middle group, and several favorites also were stung in he bottom section as underdogs recorded a dozen or more surprising results overall.
Seventh-grader Gabe Frieden (1725) pulled the most significant shocker in the Open section, knocking off expert and frequent top contender John Chamberlain. But high school student Joey Kagan actually scored the biggest upset of the entire evening, defeating Joseph Francis despite a 356-point rating difference (1545-1901).
Top seeded masters Charles Riordan and John Curdo came through unscathed, however, to head a group of nine players leading the pack going into Round 2. (Conspicuous by his absence was perennial top seed Igor Foygel, winner or co-winner of the last three tournaments, who did not play in Round One and may be skipping this month’s event. athough of course he could still jump in with one or two half-point byes).
The U1750 section was decimated at the top, where No. 1 seed Bill Stein (1742) fell to Edwin Burnett (1509); No. 2 Calvin Hori (1716) lost to 1500-rated Gus Gosselin, the well known chess organizer and official making one of his infrequent competitive appearances; and No. 3 Mark Kaprielian (1714) was held to a draw by Harry Henriques (1463).
Also getting off on the right foot was Matt Gosselin, the highest-rated seed to win his first game, and thus now No. 1 among the dozen players sharing the lead.
The top seeds in the U1400 section fared a bit better, with No. 1 James Klinkenberg and No. 2 Harvey Reed heading a group of eleven players winning their initial tests. Below that, though, there were several surprises, including unrated Jayson Besancon knocking off No. 6 seed Fred Harvey, Gregory Cermak (976) drawing No. 3 Jason Krienke (1332), and Andrew Ossman (929) also splitting the point with No. 5 Stephen Schnair (1328).
Other form reversals: Seth Johnson (1266) defeated Ethan Thompson (1561); Al Schaefer (1400) defeated Richard Seltzer (1693); Steven Eddins (1369) overcame David Martin (1647); Michael Kaye(1374) drew Menno Koning (1649); and Travis Nilsson (754) knocked off Peter Russell (1091).
Attendance dropped off a bit from the summer highs of 90 or so players each month, but the turnout was still an impressive 74 (19 in the Open section, 29 in the middle, and 26 in the bottom one). Part of the dropoff is undoubtedly due to the start of school, reducing the number of youngsters. Also, of course, the final total will undoubtedly rise as players jump in during tournament.
